When you enter into Auction Rooms Cafe, the space is completely open planned and airy, warm wooden floors, split level with a greenhouse area at the back left corner.

It would be a great venue to hire out for an event.

We ordered:

  • The New Golden Oldie – Elderflower, ginger & golden syrup (4.5)
  • Kombucha –  Purple raspberry remedy organic bubbly probiotic tea (4.5)
  • 2x Two poached eggs on sourdough or seed & sprout bread (9.5 each)
  • Black pudding and butifarra white sausage with onion jam (6.5)
  • Crispy ham & potato stakes with spiced tomato chutney (5.5)

It was a hot summer day, so both drinks were a welcome-ly refreshing from the midday heat. I personally preferred the kombucha, but I really enjoyed both!

Next to the food. Poached eggs were done perfectly with yolk that oozed out as you cut into the egg. We forjFHaFz1392451082got to specify what bread we wanted, and got the sprout and seed bread. I do love bread with bite and texture. I am not typically a fan of plain white bread, so this dish hit the spot.

The black pudding and butifarra white sausage with onion jam – yum! PiqDr81392451161With the white sausage the base is more salty than the top. I didn’t realise this, and at first thought it was all extremely salty! When in actual fact, it was not the case. The black pudding was delicious. Overall the side is on the salty-side though, so it does complement the poached eggs quite well.

Wmka8v1392451023The crispy ham & potato stacks with spiced tomato chutney are not as salty a side. well done, but not as good as the black pudding and white sausage side.

Overall a cool place to hang out, catch up with friends, while away some time, and people watch.

Kabe no Ana was so yummy, that we had to go back a second time. This time around we ordered:

  • Mentaiko Carbonara – spaghetti carbonara
  • Hotate Mentai Cream Sauce  with spaghetti, prawns and mushroom
  • Hotate Mentai Cream Sauce with scallops and shiitake mushroom  with spicy cod roe with tagliatelle (again!)
  • small croquette pizza

Personally I knew the two hotate mentai cream pastas would be amazingly yummy. But the carbonara was the stand out for me this time. I loved how it came with a soft boiled egg, so when you mix it through you get the lovely yolk through the creamy bacon pasta. (some carbonaras can have the egg too overcooked, or for me are too oily) This dish is well worth trying. I would recommend all three pastas.

Others I was dining with enjoyed the croquette pizza. I found it a bit too carb-loaded. Carb on carb, not my favourite thing. But saying that, it wasn’t terrible.

We then finished off by sharing a Chiboust Aux Fruits Rouge (strawberry and raspberry mousse cake). This time the sugar layer wasn’t as hard and crispy as the time before, but it is still a lovely light dessert to finish on.
