This is easily the best Cantonese cuisine, fine dining restaurant I have patronised.

It is silver-service from the moment you enter, to the moment you leave.

The food is delicate, beautifully presented, and flavourful. The chefs clearly know what they are doing, and never play with the food too much. The decor is quite traditional but tasteful. 24sgSh1389374215The tables are quite spaced out, to allow that diners have privacy and the noise-levels do not interfere with other diners’ conversations. The waiters and waitresses are well-trained.

We ordered a few dim sum dishes (very reasonably priced considering the venue), stir fried hor fun, and three different desserts – chilled lemongrass-flavoured jelly with aloe vera; mango pudding with pomelo and strawberries; herbal jelly with honey.

I love PS Cafe and I equally love ChoPSuey – great name.

  • San choy pau a.k.a DIY lettuce cup – cool iceberg cups filled with minced chicken and pork, sweet corn, Chinese mushrooms, tofu, beansprouts and sugar snaps in a sticky sauce, with fresh herbs.

  • General Tso’s Chicken Drumlets – petie chicken drumlets coated in black and white sesame seeds and fried in a Mongolian sweet red vinegar sauce, plated with chargrilled brussel sprouts and broccoli (didn’t eat the brussel sprouts… but the rest of the dish was very satisfying).
  • Pork Chops with chips and Edamame – pork fillets topped with a rich sweet and sour tomato sauce, stake chips and Edamame
  • Jade fried rice- long grain jasmine rice stirfried with egg and chopped spinach, basil and mint
  • Stir-fried crunchy leafy greens with whole baby garlic, white pepper and rice wine


  • Spiced pineapple galette – homemade cinnamon and clove fresh pineapple jam and crisped flaky crust served with vanilla bean ice cream and sweet cinnamon dust

All the dishes delivered on taste, quality, freshness and presentation. oLcmay1389374644I was not dis-hearted at anything that was laid on the table. My personal highlights were the san choy pau, which was fresh and popped on your taste buds; and the pork chops, steak chips and edamame with sweet and sour tomato sauce – this really reminded me of a dish my Por Por (grandmother) used to cook. Really memory conjuring.

I have to say I am typically not a massive fan of buffets. They tend not to have been cooked with so much care and presentation as dishes off an a la cart or even a degustation menu.

But, the Edge, theatre restaurant, really impressed.

It is a lovely open space. The food is so nicely laid out in approximately eight dining sections:

  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Chinese
  • Indian
  • Carving station
  • salad, cheese & fruit
  • dessert
  • tea, coffee and fruit juice

The chawanmushi, freshly made pastas, seafood bake, specially made to order Cesar salad were highlights. I didn’t much like the sushi. I wished they had, had sashimi actually. I also didn’t like their corn soup… a bit too sweet!

To get your money’s worth, instead of just hitting truck-loads of the fresh oysters, it is a good strategy to head to the desserts. So that’s what I did.

The chocolates are just lovely. The ones that were my favourite were the red wine chocolate squares, lightly dusted in icing sugar. It was very good quality chocolate, and melted in your mouth. I also loved the raspberry truffles – the outside was candy which had been broken down to a powder, which the truffle was dusted in. Mmmm.

Also loved the champagne jelly and strawberries. Such a great idea, and so well executed.

The other bits of dessert were lovely too, and the display is very Willy-Wonka looking, and very visually exciting.

The servers are all very well-mannered and attentive.

Lunch is much more worthwhile than dinner I would say. It’s cheaper, and you can make a day/afternoon of it.  At $68 SGD pp ++, it is a little pricey, but a lovely experience.

Soup Restaurant in Paragon shopping mall is located in the basement next to din tai fung.

The food is pretty decent.

We ordered:

  • Double Boiled Dried Scallop with Black Chicken Soup
  • Steamed Hand chopped Minced Pork with Salted egg yolk
  • tofu hotpot
  • stir-fried beansprouts with fish fillet pieces


Everything was well cooked and came out piping hot, except the minced pork with salted egg yolk, which I still enjoyed, however was a bit perplexed as to why it wasn’t served straight to the table, as dishes seemed to be brought out as they were cooked.

I liked how the tofu was egg-tofu, which is a bit more creamy and smooth in texture.

Would definitely go again, for a light and healthy lunch dine-in option.

Green Pumpkin is a boutique Japanese bakery with some really intricate and unique desserts.

udQHjI1389192626I first tried them when I was at Kabe no Ana having lunch, and Green Pumpkin’s desserts where on the menu at a discounted rate with any main meal purchased.

We ordered the:

  • Chocolate Royale (chocolate and blueberry cake)
  • Chiboust Aux Fruits Rouge (strawberry and raspberry mousse cake)

All three were very well done. Notably the dollop of cream on the Chocolate Royale is light and airy and almost like marshmallow pillow consistency, which I really enjoyed.

4aLY1j1389192680With the Chiboust Aux Fruits Rouge, the mousse has a light tangy zip from the berries. The lovely thing about this dessert is it’s creme-brulee-like top. It has a sugar layer which cracks nicely as you hit it firmly but gently with a teaspoon.

Lastly the yuzu cake roll, yuzu is a citrus fruit and plant originating in East Asia. It is believed to be a hybrid of sour mandarinZHAjtI1389192754 and Ichang papeda. Beautiful, light and not too sweet.

I’d recommend Green Pumpkin desserts as an end to any meal, or the shop sells beautifully presented cakes for special occasions at around the $30 SGD price point.

Kabe no Ana in conjunction with the Green Pumpkin Bakery have to be written about. This place has some very scrumptious things on the menu. (Granted though there is an ‘acquired taste’ section of the menu, which I will go into more detail about in a second).

This is an ‘Italian pasta meets Japanese cuisine’ restaurant. I would have to say it is definitely the pastas with ‘spicy crab roe’ in them which are particularly delicious and would highly recommend. Prices for pastas from $13.90 – $16.90 SGD a dish.


We ordered:

  • small seafood pizza
  • scallops and shiitake mushroom in cream sauce with spicy cod roe with tagliatelle
  • bacon and potato spaghetti
  • squid spaghetti with fermented soya bean sauce

It was the fermented soya bean sauce, which thankfully they placed in a separate  bowl, that was the loser of these four dishes. Let’s say it’s probably the same as blue cheese or bitter gourd melon…

My favourite by far was the ‘scallops and shiitake mushroom in cream sauce with spicy cod roe with tagliatelle’ – absolutely moorish and you want to go back for another mouthful. Even though I prefer tomato or tomato/cream based sauces, this definitely won me over.

We then ordered their ‘special rate’ desserts, which are discounted with any main meal purchased… (range from $3.10 – 5.90 SGD). They come from the Green Pumpkin Bakery, next door, which is obviously run/owned by the same group. I have written about these cakes in their own subsequent post…

Lastly, quite cute and comical is the Kabe no Ana’s ‘story of origin’.

Crossroads, the Marriott Cafe and Java Cafe are pretty much side-by-side, one leading to the other, Crossroads being the most exterior facing and as you walk towards the reception area, Java Cafe is more like a small take-away option, closest to the reception.

We ordered cakes from the display cabinet, which looks like it’s part of the Java Cafe, but sat in the Marriott Cafe area to eat them. The cakes probably ended up being $7SGDE5jlFf1389017463 a piece after the ++ (service and GST). So it is a little on the pricey side for a cake. But the upside is that the cakes are actually pretty decent, the ambience is nice and there is free-wifi. So it’s a pretty nice place to relax and rest your weary muscles for a while, where they let you sit for as long as you like and aren’t worried about turning the table around for the next impending customer.

We ordered:

  • cherry crumble
  • mango and lime mousse

I really enjoyed them all.0zXZIV1389017548 The fondant cake was rich and chocolatey but not too sickly sweet, the crumble just melted in your mouth, and the mango and lime mousse cake was zesty and very light.

Be careful, Java cafe teas and coffees are fairly reasonable prices I think ranging from approximately $5-6.5 SGD, however when you sit down at the Marriott Cafe, they can go up to $9.50SGD ++. But they do give you ice water or hot water free of charge. Amrmsp1389017379
